Emergency services were called to the scene on Prebensen Drive in the Napier suburb of Poraiti around 6.25pm yesterday.

It appeared a 24-year-old driver of one car was heading south towards Taradale and crossed the centre line, crashing head-on into another car driven by a 55-year-old woman, police said.

Neither car was carrying any passengers.

The younger woman is in a serious condition in the High Dependency Unit in Hawke's Bay Hospital, while the other remains in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

The police Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
