A Wellington house has been destroyed by fire overnight.

The single-storey Delhi Cres, Khandallah house was completely ablaze when crews arrived shortly before 10pm last night, Fire Service shift manager Craig Dally said.

The two people who lived in the house got out safely.

Six crews battled the blaze, with one crew still at the scene early this morning monitoring the scene.

The house was now ''un-liveable'', with the worst of the damage in the roof.

Fire safety officers would go to the scene today to investigate the cause.

A resident of the house told The Dominion Post she came home last night to find the house on fire.

The house was fully-insured, she said.
