A Wellington driver is in a serious condition in hospital after being involved in two car crashes that sent three other people to hospital, one of them also with serious injuries.
The male driver of a Mini was involved in a minor accident just after 6pm last night near the intersection of Hutt Rd and Onslow Rd.
He fled the scene, but about five minutes later was involved in a more serious crash at the intersection at the bottom of the Ngauranga Gorge, a police spokesman said.
The other car in the second crash, a Toyota Land Cruiser, rolled on impact and its front passenger needed to be cut from the vehicle, and ambulance spokesman said. The Land Cruiser had been heading south towards Wellington before the crash.
The Mini driver and a male passenger in the Toyota were taken to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition, while one male and one female Toyota passenger were hospitalised for moderate injuries.
Police, ambulance and three fire engines attended the scene, which was not cleared until 8.20pm.
