Toddler was left unattended in car

The toddler hit by a car in Lower Hutt had been left unrestrained and unattended in a car in the lead-up to the near-fatal accident, police say.

The 3-year-old boy was being looked after by his 19-year-old brother, police spokesman Nick Bohm said.

The older brother stopped the car on Naenae Rd about 2pm yesterday and went into a nearby house, leaving the 3-year-old boy unrestrained in the car.

It was not immediately clear how long the older brother was in the house.

The toddler opened the car door and got out of the car and into the path of an oncoming car.

The toddler was this morning in a stable condition in Wellington Hospital’s intensive care unit. He was expected to be transferred to a general ward today.

The police serious crash unit would investigate the crash and police would today talk to the older brother, who may be charged.

The driver of the car who hit the toddler was ‘‘very distressed’’ Bohm said.
