A man walking along a semi-rural road at 5am fell 10m down a bank and needed rescuing.
The Lower Hutt man, in his 30s, had been walking along Paekakariki Hill Rd, which links Paekakariki in Kapiti and Pauatahanui in Porirua, early this morning and for unknown reasons fell down the bank about 5am, Westpac rescue helicopter crewman Dave Greenberg said.
A cyclist heard the man calling for help from down the bank shortly before 9am.
Police, fire, ambulance, and the recue helicopter were called to the scene, 1km from the summit at the Pauatahanui side.
A paramedic was winched down and helped the man walk back up the bank, from where he was flown to Wellington Hospital with moderate injuries.
The road was blocked briefly during the operation.
