Skiers heading to Mt Ruapehu for fresh snow from Wellington can expect delays tonight on the northern outskirts of Otaki.
The northbound lane of State Highway one just north of Otaki has been closed after a truck ploughed in to a power pole just north of the railway bridge about 7pm.
Power lines are down across the highway and diversions are in place.
Police central communications shift inspector Marc Clausen said linesmen would not be able to attend to the problem until early tomorrow morning.
Power lines are strewn across the road and the power is out to homes in the area of the downed pole.
Clausen said traffic is being diverted on and off State Highway 1 via Rahui, Freemans and Te Manuao Roads.
"There will be contractors assisting motorists through the diversion throughout the night. No one was injured in the initial crash," Clausen said.
