All Blacks centre Conrad Smith's sidestep of Saturday night's Bledisloe Cup has proved a winning move as he got to be at his wife's side in Wellington to welcome their newborn son on Sunday afternoon.

The team's spokesman confirmed last night that Smith's wife, Lee-Ann, had given birth to the couple's first child.

''All are doing well,'' the spokesman said.

While details of the newest potential All Blacks star's birth were sketchy, many All Blacks fans had turned to social media to ponder the impact Smith's loss had on his team's 12-12 draw against the Wallabies in Sydney.

The 32-year-old test centre had to dash back from Australia to Wellington on the eve of the important clash and was whisked straight to the delivery suite.

Coach Steve Hansen said on Saturday Smith's wife had been due to give birth in a few weeks' time.

Initially, team management had hoped Smith would make it back in time for the test, but Mother Nature had other plans, potentially giving the Wallabies a helping hand to end New Zealand's dreams of a history-making 18th consecutive test victory. 

Perhaps Smith's new arrival would prove a bright spot for his shattered teammates, who arrived back home on Sunday.
