Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen a fatal head-on crash north of Upper Hutt this morning.

The crash happened on State Highway 2 near Kaitoke Loop Rd, between Hutt Valley and the Rimutaka Hill, about 7.15am, police said.

The female driver of one car died at the scene while the driver of the other car was taken to Wellington Hospital with moderate injuries.

Neither car had passengers.

The highway was blocked for hours in both directions with lengthy detours in place.

It was opened again at 11am but a 50kmh speed restriction was in place.

"We are particularly interested in anyone who witnessed the actual collision rather than those arriving at the scene shortly afterwards,'' Sergeant Dave Townsend said.

"It is far too early to speculate on the cause of the crash and a Serious Crash Unit investigation is continuing.

Police are in the process of advising the family members of the dead woman and will not be releasing their name until this process is completed.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed this crash to contact the Wellington District Strategic Traffic Unit on (04) 381 2000.
