The mother of a six-month-old baby ran screaming from her Hastings motel room after finding her son dead this morning.
Anvil Court Motor Lodge manager Jo Brodie was the first at the scene and said the woman was hysterical.
''The mother came out screaming and said I think my baby's dead."
Brodie said the boy was ''bonnie and solid'', but had a cold and appeared to have succumbed to cot death. He was found in a single bed.
Brodie said the mother, who has two other young children, told her she had moved into the motel - which offers long-term, cheap accomodation - to get away from her gang affiliations.
Detective Sergeant Darren Pritchard said police and paramedics were called to the motel unit in the suburb of Mayfair at about 9am and found the boy unresponsive and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
The matter is now under investigation and a number of people will be spoken to but it was unknown how the baby died at this stage, he said.
