Earthquakes jolt North Island

An earthquake has shaken residents in Manawatu, Wellington and Taranaki this morning.
The magnitude 5.1 quake struck at 7.04am. It was centred 10km south of Palmerston North and was 40km deep.
It lasted 10 to 15 seconds.
It was felt throughout the North Island.
A second quake was felt in Palmerston North at 8.05am. It measured magnitude 4.3, and struck in the same location at a similar depth.
There have been no immediate reports of injury or damage.

It's amazing that several comments talked about the earthquake as 'cool' and had an air of excitement as if it was a bit of fun. Doh! Have these people never seen what a sizeable earthquake can do to devastate people's lives.
My husband and I felt both earthquakes here in Levin. 1st one really shook the place but the cats and dogs didn't make any fuss; 2nd one much lighter and the house faintly shivered. Not as big as the 1 in '72 in Wellington - that really shook the place up!
I was sound asleep, so I didn't hear anything.I will have to be awake for the next earthquake, so I can experience one.

Yes. I felt two earthquakes this morning and one small one about 3.00 am. I am used to them but must admit it's good when they stop. A neighbour's dog barked at the time of the quakes.

I was sitting at my desk at work. The earthquake produced a gentle swaying motion, no doubt due to it's extreme depth. As always for we Wellingtonians, an interesting experience.
