Orcas spotted in Wellington Harbour
Relevant offers
There are reports of a pod of orcas frolicking in Wellington Harbour today
The killer whales were spotted near Oriental Parade and later the Interislander ferry terminal.
Oriental Parade resident Dean Podolsky saw the orcas from his apartment window.
''I saw two killer whales swimming within four metres of the sea wall along Oriental Parade at Carlton Gore Road at 8:30 AM. There may have been a third. They were approx. 3-4 metres in length, swimming slowly, and could be seen clearly from my third floor apartment.''
There are estimated to be fewer than 200 orca living in New Zealand waters.
They are most commonly spotted off the Bay of Plenty, East Coast and Hawke's Bay coasts in June, and again from October to December.

They have been seen at the Otara Markets today too. They were cruising behind one of the taro stalls. A large pod, well disguised in hoodies and sunnies. But orcas they were. No doubting it.
There were about 4 orcas cruising up and down the Eastbourne Bays at about 1pm today
did that make sense? Was it because she was from the UK and they use double the amount of words we would in NZ? I would have said.. "I rememeber all those times we thought we saw something bobbing up and down out in the ocean but it wasnt even anything. i saw them today at it was cool as.. gutted the mrs and the kids didnt get to see it" hahaha
I saw them in Petone from my staff christmas party. They were amazing, and so many of them! We were all captivated!
Hot flash from the Petone Herald, A pod of Orcas's have been spotted schooling in York Bay Port Nicholson, some v large Males, and some mums and Calves, sporting their black & white 'wet look' t -shirts, in gay abandon...hold it, ...that might be an antropomorhism too far, although, the fins on the males seemed only semi erect, though that might have been just a trick of the light, imagine the essence of tumescence in your translucence and paint a picture if u will. Anyway I was lucky enough to see it and v grateful to the cetacean God on high who favoured the 100 or so people who jointly stopped their cars, in traffic, to view the spectacle. My one regret is that Jackie n the Kidz weren't there as well, but given a choice, I'm v glad it was me who saw it all. I remember all those half glimpses of " what might have been" a fin of a dolphin or seal perhaps, erewhon I spent countless dusky n drizzly afternoons vainly searching the Irish Sea at Pembs. I was particularly struck, that I just wandered off after 10 mins or so, back to work, quite blase, ...that would never have happened in the U.K., so all must be well on several levels, if you discount the W.O.F. bill, I paid, and the AA Gold card membership ( Jackie as an assoc member only of course ), and the insurance fully comp for the new (2nd hand) Mazda Bongo, exiting a depressed BNZ account. Still what have YOU! done today? It might just be Global warming of course, is this the time to debunk,... or perhaps it's wiser to decamp? Regards Cetus
