Unexplained death near Wellington wharf
Police are treating the discovery of a man's body floating near the Miramar Wharf as an unexplained death.
A passerby called the police after spotting the body in Evans Bay about 11.10am.
''The Wellington Police Maritime Unit responded in the Police launch Lady Elizabeth III, and retrieved the body a short time later,'' Detective Inspector Paul Basham of Wellington CIB said.
''Police are now conducting a scene examination and are treating this as an unexplained death until we have further information.''
Police were yet to identify the dead person, he said.
A post-mortem will be carried out soon.
Police enquiries today will focus on identifying the man.
The area has been cordoned off by police.
Police divers have searched under the wharf.
The body was the second to be found in the capital in the past 24 hours.
Yesterday afternoon a woman's body was discovered in a block of council flats in Newtown.
