Lambton Quay's lunchtime crowds faced an unusual disruption today as more than 200 people stood completely still in a five-minute stunt to promote World Environment Day.

The 'Freeze for Five' action was a local version of an international phenomenon that has been performed in major cities including New York and Paris.

Recruited via a website, the participants gathered under the slogan, "When was the last time you stopped to think?"

Milling about on the corner of Lambton Quay and Featherston and Hunters Sts, participants took their cue from a trumpet player - freezing in place as he cut the music.

To the bemusement and befuddlement of passers-by, they did their best to not to move 12.45pm to 12.50pm.

Wellington is hosting World Environment Day today, June 5.
