New Zealand's first "freeze event", in which hundreds of people stand motionless for five minutes, took place in Wellington to coincide with World Environment Day.
Intersect, a group of young people passionate about sustainability, organised the event, in which more than 200 people froze in Lambton Quay.
Just after 12.45pm, the group - including businessmen, students, children and even dogs - leaped into inaction, leaving confused passers-by to weave through the bizarre scene.
Intersect trustee Nick Potter said the freeze was inspired by similar "flash mob" events staged around the world, but this was the first one promoting environmental issues.
