Corrections shuts down Wellington Prison
Relevant offers
Wellington Prison is to be temporarily closed and its inmates moved to other jails.
The Corrections Department announced the plan this afternoon, saying there was a "seasonal" dip in the prison population.
"We routinely open and close units when the prison population fluctuates," Assistant Regional Manager Southern Liz Nielsen said.
Formerly known as Mount Crawford Prison, the jail sits on valuable real estate on top of the Miramar Peninsula.
It has around 100 inmates, making it one of the country's smallest jails.
Staff would be relocated to either Rimutaka or Arohata Prisons.
Ms Nielsen said most of the inmates were from outside Wellington, and where possible they would be shifted to prisons in their home region.
