A major project to revamp Wellington's council-owned housing has been signed off.

The $220 million deal between Wellington City Council and the Government was formalised with the signing of the Deed of Grant at Newtown’s Te Ara Hou flats this morning.

The flats will be the first council-owned properties of about 2300 units to be refurbished, and work will begin there early next year.

Housing Minister Maryan Street said council housing was outdated and the units “small, cold, noisy and poorly configured for modern living”.

The council will contribute $90 million to the project.
