Bronze for spare cyclist
The International Olympic Committee has struck an extra bronze medal for Kiwi cyclist Wes Gough to recognise his contribution to the pursuit team's success in China.
Gough, 30, was presented with the medal at the final New Zealand team party in Beijing.
"I'm absolutely stoked," he said, before joining fellow Olympians for the return flight to Auckland, due to arrive at 7.30am today.
Gough helped New Zealand into the bronze medal race with strong performances in earlier rounds. Individual pursuit silver medallist Hayden Roulston was called up for the bronze race against Australia.
"It was a total surprise," Gough said. "I had heard that the Kiwi team had appealed to the IOC to strike another medal but I wasn't really expecting anything to come of it."
