Huge gingerbread house on display
20kg of lollies, 50kg of icing used in creation
Wellington's biggest gingerbread house will be on display at Te Papa for the next month. A team of bakers began assembling the 1.8-metre house - all of which will be edible - yesterday.
The house, created by Te Papa's catering team, will be decorated with more than 20 kilograms of lollies and 50kg of icing. It will be on display in Te Papa's second-floor foyer until January 6. Gingerbread houses began in Germany and are now a popular part of a traditional European Christmas.
Te Papa executive chef Bernd Lippmann said it was a chance to share another country's traditions with New Zealand kids. Gingerbread house kits will be available for visitors to buy to make smaller versions at home.
Any proceeds from the limited-edition kits will go to help the Wellington Children's Hospital.
