Police are concerned for the safety of a Levin man who is believed to have gone for a walk to Lake Horowhenua but never came home.
The wife of Stuart Richard Rangihuna, 39, noticed him missing about 5am on Tuesday and found a note saying he had gone for a walk to ‘‘the lake’’, believed to be Lake Horowhenua.
He did not return home after his walk and his family have not heard from him since.
Local Police and Land Search and Rescue volunteers searched tracks around Lake Horowhenua and other near-by lakes today. They will resume again tomorrow morning.
Rangihuna stands about 175 centimetres tall and is solidly built. He has a light complexion, a closely-shaven head, no distinctive tattoos, and no facial hair.
Police said they were not sure what clothes he was wearing when he left his home, but it was possible he had white running shoes on.
Anyone who has any information about Rangihuna is asked to contact Levin Police on (06) 366 0500.
Meanwhile, an 82-year-old Ashhurst man has been found safe and well after going missing earlier today, police say.
Police search coordinator sergeant Andy Brooke said volunteers and police officers had searched the Ashhurst area and the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter completed an aerial sweep in trying to find Eric Rex Looney.
He said the man had wandered onto a property and was found by a home owner in their backyard at around 8.30pm. The home owner then notified police.
“I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the search for Rex, including Rex’s family and the owner of the property where he was found,” Brooke said.
