Two people have died in separate car crashes in less than 24 hours on state highways in Manawatu.
At 2.45pm today a man in his 30s was killed when the car he was a passenger in crashed into a power pole.
The driver and other passenger in the car received moderate injuries and were taken by ambulance to Palmerston North Hospital following the crash at the intersection of SH 2 and Makirikiri Rd.
Police central communications team leader Kirsty Henson said there was a corner nearby the crash site but the cause would be unknown until the serious crash unit had finished investigating.
She said Manawatu police had been kept busy after an elderly man died in a head-on crash on SH1 south of Sanson yesterday. He was 80-year-old Kenneth William Piddington, of Wellington.
The crash at 4.15pm left the driver of the other vehicle trapped but uninjured.
