The yellow flash of a speed camera has made more than one driver see red, but not many go home to get a hammer to attack the camera van.
Somphteth Thammauong, 23, was snapped on February 3 on the motorway near Johnsonville.
In Porirua District Court yesterday, Judge Jan Kelly was told he got a hammer from home and returned to the road opposite the van, ran across two lanes, jumped the median barrier and ran across another two lanes.
He hammered the rear windscreen till it broke and tried to grab the camera before he was told that police had been called.
Judge Kelly said he was to pay the $285.75 repair bill for the window and do 75 hours' community work. She said it was appalling offending and he should be embarrassed and ashamed.
