Te Puke's giant kiwifruit has won itself a mention in a list of essential tourist sights.

The four-storey-high kiwifruit slice in Bay of Plenty has been named in Lonely Planet's latest Bluelist - a collection of what it calls the best and latest trends, destinations, journeys and experiences in travel worldwide.

The big kiwifruit, White Island, Mussel Inn - a boutique microbrewery in Golden Bay - and the Napier Prison Backpackers, where guests can sleep behind bars, are among the New Zealand attractions found in Bluelist 2008.

The Kiwi360 Company built the big kiwifruit from Maori canoe paddles at its Te Puke complex. Bluelist names it among its "Big!" top 10, along with Australia's big banana and Canada's big beaver.

White Island takes a commanding spot in the top 10 volcanoes, with a photo showing it "hissing and spitting" at visitors. Bluelist says it is arguably more impressive than one of New Zealand's top tourist attractions, Mt Ruapehu.

Queen Charlotte Sound is listed among the top 10 explorer trails, and jetboating the Shotover River near Queenstown is rated among the best river trips in the world.
