Survey shows GST rise opposition

A new survey shows many Kiwis believe the current tax system is unfair.
But they are equally adamant that they do not want to pay more in GST to fix the system.
The ShapeNZ survey for the Business Council for Sustainable Development asked 2281 members in an online survey about taxes and found that eight out of 10 respondents thought the system needed reform.
Nearly seven out of 10 of those questioned also thought the lowest rates of tax on personal income should be dropped.
But 62 per cent of those questioned opposed raising GST to 15 per cent.
The survey was carried out after a tax working group recommended reform of the tax system, including a land tax, raising GST and lowering company and top personal tax rates.
Prime Minister John Key signalled last week the Government would lift GST to 15 per cent and match it with across-the-board tax cuts. He ruled out a land tax.
