Trade Me has appointed American entrepreneur Mike DelPrete as its head of strategy and given him a brief to seek opportunities to expand the business.
It is believed to be the first time Trade Me has recruited an executive from overseas into such a senior position.
Chief executive Jon Macdonald said in a statement that DelPrete would be responsible for ''developing a pipeline of new interesting ventures for us to consider'' as well as coordinating Trade Me's overall corporate strategy.
DelPrete was founder and chief executive of Agora Games, which developed software for online gaming communities and was acquired by fellow privately-owned US firm Major League Gaming in 2009. He has already moved to Wellington.
Trade Me's shares have continued trading at a modest premium to their $2.70 listing price since majority owner Fairfax floated a third of the business on the NZX last month.
