Work has started on a new apartment block across the road from Wellington Hospital in Newtown.

The four-storey Masina Apartments, which will include 41 residential units and three ground floor shops, is being built on the former Collins Motors site on the corner of Riddiford and Hall streets.

Kelvin Taylor of Taylor Property Plus, who is managing the project for Messenger Holdings, said it included a mix of studio, one-and two-bedroom apartments.

It was designed by Novak and Middleton and was being built by Redican and Allwood. The $15 million project is expected to be completed by May or June next year.

Seven apartments were sold off the plans as required to secure bank funding, while the rest were being held for long-term investment.

Property developer Vlad Barbalich bought the property from garage proprietor Tai Collins for $1.65 million in 2009.

Resource consent for the development was obtained in January last year and earlier this year council granted consent to clear contaminated soil from the site.

Taylor said the development was designed to enhance the area and extend the Newtown shopping centre further along Riddiford St towards Adelaide Rd. It would have a verandah along the street front.
