The annual Out Takes film festival opens tonight at Wellington's Paramount Cinema and runs until June 12.

The long-running festival again boasts a wide assortment of more than 50 features and shorts from around the world, several of which are unlikely to get a general release at cinemas.

This year it includes one of the most controversial and talked-about films of the past year - LA Zombie.

The film has become notorious after it was banned from screening at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival. Directed by American Bruce LaBruce, it was refused classification by Australia's Classification Board.

Despite the ban, the film festival's director screened the film. He was later fined A$750. The film screens in Wellington on June 10, 10.25pm.

Among the many highlights are A Marine's Story (Friday, 8.30pm), documentaries Stonewall Uprising, (Sunday, 4.30pm) and great band Le Tigre: On Tour (Monday, 6.45pm). For the full programme go to outtakes.org.nz
