The president of the Wellington Pitbull Terrier owners club reckons bad owners let the breed down, not the breed itself.

Lena McDonald helped organise a pit bull owners show held at the Wainuiomata School Hall yesterday and hopes to run one every six months as a way of promoting positive dog ownership for the much-maligned breed.

The club aims to teach owners how to look after the breed and recommends not letting the dogs off the leash and de-sexing them to prevent unwanted puppies.

''We just want people to have a good day with their dogs.''
