There is no shortage of skilled musicians in Wellington, and now more of them will be able to show off their expertise.

A piano donated by the family of Eileen Strachan is being wheeled out on to the waterfront outside the TuaTua Cafe on Frank Kitts Park for anyone to play when the weather is fine.

The Port Nicholson Rotary Club has been involved in the initiative.

It was officially launched on Saturday with city councillor Ray Ahipene-Mercer doing the honours.

Mr Ahipene-Mercer said it was an extension of busking, and that he believed it to be the first of its kind in the country.

''The more live music there is around the city the better. That's a high public-use area and anyone can get up and have a tinkle. You don't have to have huge expertise. Anyone can get on and have a go.''
