Over the hill from Wellington, cafes and restaurants line the main streets of towns like Greytown, Martinborough and even Featherston. The Wairarapa region is increasingly a producer of fine products ranging from specialty cheeses and chocolates to authentic French pastries. In Greytown, the Main Street Deli and Cafe has been around since 1992, specialising in serving homemade products in the cafe and as a takeaway option in the deli next door.

Main Street Deli . . . is a pleasant place to stop for lunch on the way north for a long weekend.


The overall feel of the place is . . . a relaxed, casual and welcoming cafe to visit. In particular, the staff are incredibly friendly. On a sunny day, the tree-lined courtyard out the back is an oasis off the busy main street. Sparrows twitter in the trees as we savour our food and coffee.

The interior is . . . rustic and some might say in need of renovation. The yellow painted walls are a bit garish, and the tables and chairs are battered but not in a shabby chic kind of way. You can see the kitchen from the courtyard, and again, it looks a bit rundown through the window.

I'm tempted by . . . the mint and feta frittata ($6.50). Our waitress rates that particular one - a rival parmesan frittata also catches my eye. Mine is a perfect choice. Made on site that day, the combination of the mint and feta is delicious. Served with chutney on the side, the mint is strong, giving the dish a fresh, summery taste. The pies, sandwiches and other counter products are all freshly made on site, along with the chutney.

My friend orders . . . the cornish pasty ($7.50). It's average and he wishes he had ordered the whitebait fritters ($25).

The service is . . . friendly and helpful. Also super fast. Our coffees arrive not long after we've sat down, as does our warmed counter food. The wifi isn't working but the waitress comes out and back again to offer advice about how to access the internet via our phones.

The coffee is . . . Mojo. It's good. Strong and the perfect temperature.

I can read . . . plenty of choices of newspapers and magazines.

We're surrounded by . . . tourists with foreign accents. A German couple are asking the waitress for directions, another couple are poring over a map.

An added bonus is . . . the deli next door. Owner Glenys Almao tries to source all products from the region, and she makes the relishes, jams, and bakery. The deli makes all its own pies - varieties such as venison, fish, wild boar, beef and burgundy.

If I went back again I'd try the . . . potato cakes with wilted spinach ($18). They're a huge seller.
