OPINION: Your graphic showing the effect on Wellington of a one-metre sea-level rise (Dec 5-6) was a timely wake-up call. Such a rise is inevitable, and will probably happen much sooner than 2100.

This will have implications for all building owners in the CBD, and for any new developments on the waterfront.

Who in their right mind would buy one of the apartments that are to replace the Overseas Passenger Terminal, knowing that sea-level rise will erode its future value?

What will happen to the stability of CBD buildings when the fill on which they sit becomes saturated by seawater?

Well then lets hope the next big earthquake since 1840 comes sooner rather than later. With any luck the harbour floor will be lifted another metre and we all will be high and dry! Any bets on which might come first?

John If it were correct it would be a tragedy John, But it's not thank God. I hope in years to come we actually sack and prosecute the people promulgating this Gaia religion, Especially those who have orchestrated the wicked attacks on ordinary scientists who have rightly questioned the orchestrated science behind it. The Sun has been and always will be the biggest influence on our planet climatically, that isn't to say we shouldn't try and live as sustainably and thoughtfully as we can, we should but not the Gaia Fundi religionists way.

The sea level is not going to rise. What is happening, in my opinion, is the sea bed is rising causing the incoming tide pastern to change and as a result forcing water further on shore giving the impression that sea levels are rising. The Colorado River, it is estimated, deposits into the sea each year two mountains of earth. Every river in the world runs dirty at least at some time each year, where do the scientists think that all the earth goes. Global warming and sea levels rising is a crock of cr@p.

Or if you retain the ability to think for yourself and are not deluded by the UN wealth distribution czars (IPCC) you should grab all the cheap coastal land and reap huge profits when the sea level does not rise.
