OPINION: Sentencing Alison Downer to jail was appropriate but insufficient time, given that it was her fourth conviction.

I would wager the number of times driven intoxicated between convictions without apprehension could be significant.

In Utah, where I live, she would have been charged with a third- degree felony and, if convicted, would face up to 15 years' jail and be fined up to $10,000 for reckless behaviour culminating in the death of Frank van Kampen.

A menace justly removed from society, clearly illustrating the need for a three strike rule for serious repeat offenders. I look forward to that change.

For all the liberal hand-wringers, remember it is only serious crimes that will fall under this proposed legislation.

I fully support such a move and would urge the Government to take urgency on the proposed changes.

It will come too late for Jude Pouwels and her family. Perhaps the three-strikes bill could be called "The Frank van Kampen Bill".

All New Zealand will recognise it and it will be a fitting tribute to him and all others who pay the tragic price for the Alison Downers out there in society.

Silent and reckless irresponsible menaces. May this law change come as soon as possible.
