OPINION: The trend towards stomach stapling is a mystery to me.
My father was overweight all his life. Like a lot of fatties, he did not appear to be overeating, but he must have been.
In his seventies, when he lost much of his sight through glaucoma and was found to have type-2 diabetes, he went on a diet and lost 56lb. He retained his new, very slim, figure until his death aged 86.
The key was a diet designed by an unsmiling dietician, and his own tremendous self-discipline.

Too right, every overweight person I know eats heaps. Having been a little heavy at times myself, I had to admit to myself that I was in fact eating more than my slimmer friends, especially more of the wrong foods. Sure they ate as much as I did when I was out, but I was having bigger meals, and more fatty/sugary meals, on a regular basis. I made all sorts of crap excuses (like the now-debunked 'slow metabolism' theory) but at the end of the day, I was just eating too much. The answer was to stop gobbling the wrong food and take responsibility for myself. What I found great is that I could eat heaps of food that was good for me and not have a weight problem, and lost weight if I just went for a few walks etc. I'm not sure why people imagine they have to starve themselves, and if they can't, then opt for a stomach staple. Good on your dad for turning his life around.
