Letter: The reward for Steven Joyce

OPINION: New broom Steven Joyce has been rewarded. This has happened after his ruthless behaviour to the people of the Kapiti Coast, where he wants to push a 100-metre-wide expressway through quiet communities against their and their council's wishes.
Some years back, Waikanae was voted the best small place in the world to live, with beautiful gardens, a great beach, lagoons and a tranquil river. Two thousand stinking and noisy trucks a day are expected to roar through this idyllic place and through the rest of Kapiti.
This should tell us everything we need to know about this Government. Their first big shot turns out to be non-democratic, anti-communities, anti-environment and cheap.

I could not agree with this writer. I also live in Kapiti - Paraparaumu, and the continued 'wingeing' againstt the democratic vote of Kapiti District on the expressway is difficult to stomach. The writer talks about 100 metres wide, when in reality the motorway section is going to be about 60 metres wide - the sides will be grauduated banking. Quietness will be achieved by lowering the expressway some 3-4 metres below surface level. I've seen a much larger volume motorway recently going through Bellingham USA (Vancouver - Seattle), this was a six lane motorway. The notable thing was that houses that were less than 100 metres from the edge of the motorway, the sounds I heard were much more like birds and general hum of local traffic. The design of the motorway needs to be presented to Kapiti for inspection and comment then. Your reader would be advised to exercise patience, and keep her rhetoric until this is published.
