OPINION: I want to comment on MetService's five-day weather forecast published last Friday. I understand that weather forecasting isn't an exact science, but the forecast was so wrong that it beggared belief.

On the basis of the forecast, most people would have been loath to plan any activity that involved being outside at the weekend.

It turned out that Wellington had one of the best weekends I can remember.

As an avid Dominion Post reader, I'd like to know why the MetService forecast proved to be so badly wrong and an assurance that its forecasts can be given any credence in future.

It's the weather, people. It changes. Duh!

I think that the best joke is when I'm listening to the radio and being told that the weather is the exact opposite of what I can see out of my window.

Surely someone in Radio NZ could ring the major centers and ask them what the weather was up to just then. Then at least they'd be right once a day!

Metservice even get the forecast wrong for the current day! There has been many times I have gone on their website to find the actual temperature is higher than the forecasted high for the day!

It wasn't just the weather it was the temperatures tv3 had as well. Both Monday & Tuesday tv3 had temps of 18 & 19 degrees respectively when the Metservice site had Welly as 21 & 22. Go figure ....

Try Aucklands weather - we are told one thing at 7pm one night and the next day it isn't as we were told. It's more reliable to look out the window and make our own judgment.
