OPINION: Wellywood; how crass. Like "Rotovegas", it's a bit of Kiwi tongue-in-cheek humour, as Sir Peter Jackson puts it, that has grown rather tiresome.

Wellington can stand on its formidable reputation in film technology without having to appropriate the name of another film-making centre. So how mayor Kerry Prendergast thinks it captures the essence of our city, I have no idea.

This ripoff sign hardly reflects our city's creative talent. It only dilutes our Wellington brand and cheapens our image.

However, the disturbing thing about this eyesore is that it seems to be a done deal. Of course Wellington airport has no taste, judging by its terminal carpet, but wouldn't it have to get at least planning approval for this substantial construction?
