OPINION: How many more international anti-whaling conferences and meetings must New Zealand's representative, Sir Geoffrey Palmer, attend before he realises the futility of seeking "diplomatic alternatives" to end the whaling, especially as he himself admits that this is a very uncertain prospect?

Perhaps if he applied his considerable intellect to the problem and ceased to consider only the diplomatic approach, he might realise that strong action is the only means left to us in the face of the dishonest and determined Japanese.

Nine years of whale killing continued under the Labour-led government, despite its best efforts to stop it. How many thousands of whales had to die in that time?

If only we could follow the lead of our confident and courageous neighbour, Australia, and threaten to go to the International Court of Justice if Japan doesn't stop killing whales in the Southern Ocean.

New Zealand has to be brave and stop the blood-letting.
