OPINION: What a breath of fresh air was the story of the suggested development of the National War Memorial Park. This outlined the decision to put Buckle St below ground to allow unimpeded surface access through the area in front of the memorial.

Those responsible for coming to this decision have to be congratulated for not taking cost as the only factor that matters, and proposing a solution that will stand the test of time for Wellingtonians. Though there's still the question of getting the budget approved, I hope that can now proceed smoothly.

Your report didn't mention environmental issues, so if any have been raised, they've obviously been ruled inconsequential. It's probably worth noting that one of the main reasons given for scuttling the below-ground option for the inner-city bypass, part of the same road just a little further west, was environmental.

At long last, it appears that development sense has prevailed in ensuring that pedestrians and residents in the area (including pupils) can enjoy the city, its attractions and history, and, at the same time, a transport solution has been found to give motorists relatively free passage through the area.
