Letter: Not thwarting the process

Letters to the Editor
OPINION: NZEI is not flatly rejecting the introduction of national standards as you state. Instead, it is taking a rational and measured approach by calling for the standards to be trialled. That call is backed by education academics and growing numbers of schools, parents and members of the public.
Rather than thwarting the process as you suggest, NZEI, as a professional organisation, is simply questioning the wisdom and logic of hurriedly implementing untested educational policy. We, as educators, have a collective responsibility and professional obligation to ensure that what happens with children's learning is educationally sound and evidence-based.
When it comes to children, doesn't it make sense to introduce a system in which the creases have been ironed out first, rather than waiting until later to find out where they are?
