OPINION: We are very happy to hear of Kerry Prendergast's decision to seek re-election as Wellington's mayor.

Her contribution to Wellington's position as New Zealand's events capital is matched by the importance the city places on the cultural diversity of its population. This is reflected in the wide range of activities and festivals that make up Wellington's events calendar.

Ms Prendergast has been a strong advocate for the Wellington Chinese New Year Festival.

Her belief in, and support for, the event has been a huge factor in its growth to become an iconic event for Wellington.

Her personal participation in the festival each year is a testament to the value she places on our efforts to preserve our culture and the contribution of our community to the city.

As mayor, she was at our inaugural event in 2002. It would be most fitting were she to be there to celebrate the festival's 10th anniversary in 2011.

Although, traditionally, the Chinese don't believe four to be a lucky number, a fourth term with Ms Prendergast as our mayor will be extremely lucky for the Chinese New Year Festival.

We wish her abundant luck for her campaign.
