OPINION: The article by Thomas Chin of the Distilled Spirits Association (Features, Sept 1) shows curious logic. He emphasises the need for personal responsibility in curbing binge drinking and suggests that this is the answer to the problem.

He then uses the example of how a "crackdown on speeding" produced the lowest road toll for years last Queen's Birthday Weekend.

By contrast, this clearly shows that restrictions in the activities of all of us (that is, by law) that are properly enforced do a better job than leaving matters to the individual.
