OPINION: Good on Red Nicholson and the news media (Sept 3) for highlighting the rough deal many wheelchair users get when they want to attend events - in Mr Nicholson's case, buying tickets to a U2 concert at Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium in November.

Tickets, plus a booking fee, for him and his support person came to a whopping $380 - the cheapest wheelchair-accessible seating available. Thanks to some media attention, concert organisers came to the party and offered some discounted seats in the area allocated to wheelchair users.

But this should be standard practice, as it is in Europe. And in Australia, most state governments operate a companion card system. This provides free entry for support people accompanying disabled people who need fulltime attendant care.

Wouldn't it be great if New Zealand followed Europe and Australia's examples?
