Letter: We'd be crazy to scrap the trains
I applaud Sue Kedgley for her article about the decline of the railways (Opinion, Feb 26). How can we be so foolish? Petrol is not getting cheaper.
So much freight could go by rail and save repairs to the roads. Families could travel by train if the fares for children were reduced. We're a crazy society indeed.
The train between Wellington and Auckland hardly stops at all, so ''tourists will enjoy the trip more''. But one of the things tourists on the trains enjoy most is the chance to mingle and chat to local people.
Let the train stop at every station. When I had visitors/ tourists who came to me by train, I had to drag them off at Ohakune. Tourists don't care how long the trip takes.
