Two Little Boys, a feature film starring Oscar winner Bret McKenzie, will hit New Zealand cinemas on September 20.

The announcement was made on the film's Facebook page this morning.

Two Little Boys is a Southland-based comedy with McKenzie and Australian comedian Hamish Blake as two mates who get into a spot of bother.

Nige (McKenzie) and Deano's (Blake) friendship is put under pressure by an unfortunate accident involving a hot meat pie, the sleepy town of Invercargill and the untimely death of a Scandinavian soccer star.

Directed by Robert Sarkies, director of Scarfies, the movie was filmed in and around Invercargill and the Catlins.

Mr Sarkies' brother, Duncan wrote the book the film was based on and co-wrote the script.

The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year.
