The Kilbirnie sports centre will turn arts centre for the first time tomorrow night, when a nautical-themed production takes the stage.
Choreographer Lyne Pringle will present a one-off event entitled Ocean Wave, featuring dance and live music from Trust Porirua City Brass.
Ms Pringle said she fell in love with the floors in the building and felt "they really needed to be danced upon".
"This iconic building has potential to showcase the arts as well as sports," she said.
The show will feature music from British sea songs to Handel, the Beach Boys and music from Titanic.
"It will be a fun-filled hour-and-a-half concert incorporating beautiful contemporary dance ... old-fashioned surf life-saving drills ... projections of superb underwater photographs around the Miramar peninsula ... and more."
Ms Pringle said the concert was designed to build a sense of community in the eastern suburbs.
Ocean Wave, September 15 at 6.30pm, ASB Sports Centre. Tickets $15 adults, $5 children and pensioners.
