The Wellington-based Royal New Zealand Ballet has a new music director who has worked with the likes of ballet legend Rudolf Nureyev.

Nigel Gaynor, a respected ballet conductor, will take up the role in January.

Gaynor, originally from Australia, worked with The Australian Ballet for 15 years.

Along with working with Nureyev, Gaynor has also worked with Sir Robert Helpmann and Jiri Kylian; conducted The Australian Ballet's Red Earth on live television; and collaborated on new ballets with choreographers Wayne McGregor and Christopher Wheeldon.

For the past decade he has been based in Britain working with Northern Ballet, English National Ballet and The Royal Ballet.
