Bats Theatre is relocating to a former Dixon St pub while its Kent Tce home gets earthquake-strengthening work.
Bats business development manager Chris O'Neill said the site of the former Big Kumara, upstairs on the corner of Cuba Mall and Dixon St, would be the theatre's new home for about a year.
Its Kent Tce home for the past 22 years will undergo earthquake strengthening, and is also likely to get a second theatre space built upstairs.
It had been due to move to the McKenzie Theatre in the Capital E centre in Civic Square but after a report came back showing that was earthquake prone, the site of the former Big Kumara was chosen.
''We found somewhere even better,'' Mr O'Neill said.
Not much work was needed to turn the space into a theatre.
Bats had its final show in Kent Tce on Saturday night.
Little Town Liars will open at Bats' new site on February 7 as part of the 2013 New Zealand Fringe festival.
The Big Kumara closed in October. Its parent company, Dixon Cuba Hospitality, has been placed in liquidation, owing Inland Revenue more than $120,000.
