Noted film and TV producer Dave Gibson has been appointed chief executive of the New Zealand Film Commission.

Gibson, founder of Wellington-based production company The Gibson Group, replaces Graeme Mason as head of the industry funding and development body.

He was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to film in 2012.

Starting from a small Courtenay Place office in the 1980s, Gibson's company produced the drama series Duggan in 2000, the films The Silent One in 1984 and The Irrefutable Truth About Demons in 2000, as well as many other dramas and documentaries for the domestic and international market.

Gibson is in the process of selling his shares in The Gibson Group and starts his new role in January.
