STAR QUALITY: Irena Shadbolt, left, and Amelia Walshe.

Two Wellington girls will star on the stage in the upcoming musical tour of Annie.

Amelia Walshe and Ilena Shadbolt, both from Wellington, were told yesterday that of the more the 600 girls who auditioned, they would play Annie, along with Aucklander Zoe Fifield, 13.

Amelia, 11, said she was "crazy excited" when she found out, especially after mucking up her dance routine in auditions.

"I thought I was gone but then they read my name out," she said.

IIena, 12, said she probably got the role because of her voice.

"Because I haven't done any dancing," she said.

The three will alternate in the star role for the touring UK-based production, which start on May 23 in Wellington and June 13 in Auckland.

Another 48 girls who auditioned will also appear on stage as orphans.

UK-based choreographer and associate director Jonny Bowles said all the girls who auditioned were wonderful talents.

"But in particular, our three girls chosen to play Annie have absolutely shone with star quality."
