My final post for Blog on the Tracks for 2009 was a look at Connan Mockasin. In that post I said of Connan, "he has something that nobody has".
I really believe that.
I believed it when I sat and interviewed him nearly five years ago. I believed it when I saw him doing his blues-meets-bubblegum-pop thing (as Connan & The Mockasins) shortly after I interviewed him. I believed it when listening to the early EPs and when seeing subsequent gigs. Including the one I wrote about at the very end of 2009.
Connan's debut longplayer as a solo artist feels like it has been a long time coming. And I'm excited about it as it should see him capable of achieving that very rare feat: creating something in this country that is unique. Never mind coming from New Zealand, Connan Mockasin is making up his own musical world.
Again, I said something along those lines in that post a month or so ago:
He is the master of his own musical language. He, like Phil Judd, like Chris Matthews, like only a few others in New Zealand, is saying something wholly original. He is doing it as a songwriter and performer.
The debut album by Connan will be released in just a couple of weeks. It is called Please Turn Me into the Snat. You will be able to pick it up from February 22, 2010.
The album has already seen the release of one single, Megumi the Milkway Above.
And now - the second single - It's Choade My Dear - will be released.
You have the chance to hear it now - exclusively - here. Just click right here!
It is FREE for you to download.
That link will take you to It's Choade My Dear. And from there, on February 22, you will be able to take yourself to a music store, or to an online shop, where you'll be able to purchase Please Turn Me into the Snat.

Hmmmm well I must say that I was very underwhelmed from seeing him live. I believe he opened for Liam Finn at Bodega once.
I had heard all this hype, but didn't really deliver sadly.
I have to admit that's one of the strangest (and therefore original!) songs I've heard in a long time .. sounds a little like the beatles on acid - but not. Already it's stuck in my head
@ Vim Fuego - yes, yes I do.
Original maybe, but that singing voice of his is an acquired taste. I liked the melody of 'Siamese Dream' (?), but the vocal was too annoying for me to sustain interest.
Even the fact that it's free fails to excite me.
Meh. He does look like Brian Jones in that pic, though, but I'm not sure if that's a plus or not. BTW, Simon, never mind those having a go at you - John Mayer is coming to tour and he thinks your body is a wonderland. I know, I heard him say it on radio...
Yuck, what horrible vocal effects. Sounds like a bloody kindergarten singing.
Original doesn't necessarily mean good. This is a prime example of that.
a misunderstood genius or a man trying too hard to be different?
