My Playlist

A little while ago, someone forced me to go onto my computer, open itunes and write down the first 15 songs that came up when I pressed "shuffle".

Well, okay, they didn't force me. It was one of those Facebook invites that I usually try to avoid. But their list included singers such as Jack Johnson and Queen, so I was all ready to feel superior.

Unfortunately, instead, this is what came out:

1. Somewhere I belong - Linkin Park
2. Bamboleo - Gypsy Kings
3. El Cuarto De Tuia - Buena Vista Social Club
4. Sweet England - Jim Moray
5. The Twilight Hour - The The
6. Down on My Knees - Bread
7. Bizet: Carmen - Habanera; L'Amour Est Un Oiseau Rebelle - Tatiana Troyanos
8. El Caporal - My Morning Jacket
9. Bizet: Les Pecheurs De Perles - C'est toi ... Au Fond De Temple Saint - Gregory Cross, Gino Quilico
10. They Say feat John Legend and Kanye West - Common
11. Rocket Man - Elton John
12. Whatever You Need - Tina Turner
13. Streets of Philadelphia - Bruce Springsteen
14. I wish I knew - Billy Taylor and the Billy Taylor Trio
15. Madame George - Van Morrison

The first thing I want to say about this extraordinary list is that I'm no Linkin Park fan.

Quite the contrary - when their boring screeching was popular a few years back, I was opting out. But somehow their CD made its way onto my computer and came back to haunt me.

The other main thing that should be noted is the preponderance of Spanish music and opera. Now I like Placido Domingo as much as the next man, but this is giving quite a misleading picture.

Tina Turner I put down to one questionable former flatmate, Elton John to another, Jim Moray to a younger brother with a penchant for cheesy English folk music and Bread to, well, who can say?

In other words, there's basically nothing on my list that should be on my list.

I'd say Madame George comes closest, but I'd probably prefer Ballerina off Astral Weeks if I was really being picky.

Feeling hurt, and in the interests of fairness, I quickly wrote up another list of 15 songs that might be more appropriate. It went like this:

1. Bob Dylan – Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again
2. Leonard Cohen – Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye
3. R Kelly – World’s Greatest
4. David Bowie / M Ward – Let’s Dance
5. David Byrne & The Dirty Projectors – Knotty Pine
6. Beirut – Elephant Gun
7. Sufjan Stevens – Mistress Witch From McClure
8. Richard Hell and the Voidoids – Blank Generation
9. Journey – Don’t Stop Believin’
10. Lucinda Williams – Side of the Road
11. Radiohead - Reckoner
12. The Kinks – Death of a Clown
13. Lil' Wayne – Mrs Officer
14. Sam Cooke – A Change is Gonna Come
15. Old Crow Medicine Show – Wagon Wheel

Okay, so those aren't my favourite songs ever, they're not in any particular order and I chose some to make me seem cooler and my tastes broader than they actually are. But I'd have been happy to see a list like that appear.

What would want on your playlist? How about what you'd least like to see?

Firstly I hate I-Tunes.. it is the evil that takes over my computer a bit like spyware, so I don't have it prefering the infinitely cool Winamp classic look.. Not all of my music makes it onto the current play list all the time.. I'm quite proud of some the stuff I have collected over time .. less proud of others...

Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Bread, Dr Hook, ABBA, Aqua, Lily Allen, Katie Perry, Little Boots, Bon Jovi, GNR, Alice Cooper, Poison, Pink, Weezer, Zed, Gin Wigmore, My Chemical Romance, Cobra Starship,Rolling Stones.. I'm having trouble thinking of any more right now as I am not at home to have a gander. I can solemnly swear there is no Linkin Park, Nikelback, Kings of Leon, Cold Play or U2 littering my collection gleaned over the last ten years in various ways.

Awesomely I'm not ashamed of any of that - it shows everything I'm into and is a good mix of international and kiwi artists.

Thankfully Bon Jovi and Daniel Beddingfield didn't come up. Oh the shame.

I was saddened at my lack of musical diversity when my "top 25 most played" was dominated by only 4 bands - Interpol, Nine Inch Nails, Bloc Party and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Seriously, what happened to the other 300+ bands I have on my itunes? Obviously just for show.

Louisette   #6   11:27 am Nov 17 2009

1) Jethro Tull – Roll Yer Own

2) Tool – Vicarious

3) Slipknot – Psychosocial

4) Tom Petty – Yer So Bad

5) David Bowie – Ashes to Ashes

6) Within Temptation – Somewhere

7) Iron Maiden – Wicker Man

8) Rammstein – Ich Wil

9) Trivium – A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation

10) Nightwish – Ever Dream

11) The Rolling Stones – Gimme Shelter

12) Cream – Tales of Brave Ulysses

13) The Travelling Wilburies – Congratulations 14) Bob Dylan – Shelter from the Storm

15) Wednesday 13th – Bad Things

There you have it. Of course it leaves out a lot, but it's probably about as representative as a list of 15 songs can be. Obzen, if you're reading this, have you figured out what name I post under over at BOTT? ;-)

What's funny is that Tom wanted to prove that he was some ecclectic metrosexual cultured snobbite and instead his honest iPod showed that he's just a regular numb-nuts. Bless ya Tom!
